The number of animals killed by vehicles in the United States is estimated at a million per day.
Many of these animals are slow moving, poor sighted animals such as skunks. Skunks are omnivores eating both plants and other animals insects and larvae, earthworms, grubs, small rodents, lizards, salamanders, frogs, snakes, birds, moles, eggs, ect. They commonly eat berries, roots, leaves, grasses, fungi, and nuts.
Skunks are also known to be scavengers, eating leftover carcasses from other kills. These dead animals could be roadkill making it a danger to skunks eating it on the road. When seasons change and food becomes scarce, skunks wander closer to civilization. This puts them in the position of crossing busy roadways. Skunks have poor eye sight and rely primarily on their sense of smell, not to mention they are particularly slow.
